Detectives in Busia have made a significant breakthrough in their fight against crime with the arrest of a notorious robbery suspect believed to be the mastermind behind a daring raid at Bishop Sulumeti Chelelemuk Girls Secondary School in the county's Teso North sub-county.
The incident, which occurred on March 8, 2024, sent shockwaves through the community as the high school fell victim to a brazen burglary. The school's Principal, Benard Juma Olula, aged 45, had been on the police radar for some time, suspected of orchestrating a series of violent robberies across several counties, including Bungoma, Vihiga, Kakamega, and Busia.
Juma, reputed to be a hardened criminal with a penchant for violence, allegedly led a five-member gang in the meticulously planned operation. The gang made off with valuable items, including HP laptops, and thousands of shillings from the school bursar's and principal's offices.
According to crime research detectives, Juma's criminal activities extended beyond Kenya's borders, with alleged links to Uganda. It is believed that he had been sourcing firearms from Uganda for use in armed robberies until his main supplier was apprehended and sentenced to 40 years in prison.
In light of these developments, prosecution processes have been initiated, with detectives obtaining custodial orders to further their investigations. Their aim is not only to bring Juma to justice but also to apprehend his accomplices and dismantle the entire criminal network responsible for the spate of robberies plaguing the region.
