Kenya Denies Allegations of Involvement in Ukraine Conflict

In a recent development, Kenya's Foreign Affairs Principal Korir Sing'oei has categorically dismissed allegations made by the Russian Ministry of Defence, claiming that five Kenyans were involved in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Sing'oei reiterated Kenya's steadfast commitment to the principles of non-interference in the internal affairs of other states and the peaceful settlement of disputes between nations.

In a statement issued on Friday, March 15, Sing'oei emphasized that Kenya stands firm in its adherence to international conventions aimed at combating mercenarism, including the 1989 United Nations Convention on International Convention against Recruitment, Use, Financing and Training of Mercenaries, and the 1977 OAU Convention for the Elimination of Mercenarism in Africa. Kenya vehemently rejects any insinuation of involvement in mercenary activities in Ukraine and dissociates itself from such claims.

The statement further underscored Kenya's foreign policy principles, highlighting its commitment to non-interference, non-alignment, and the promotion of peaceful dispute resolution mechanisms. Sing'oei affirmed that Kenya's interactions with other state actors in international relations are guided by these fundamental principles.

The allegations made by the Russian Ministry of Defence, suggesting the presence of Kenyan soldiers in Ukraine, were part of a broader claim by the Federation that over 13,000 foreign soldiers had relocated to Ukraine since February 2024 to support efforts against Russian forces. While Kenya was singled out as the only East African country allegedly involved, Sing'oei refuted these claims, stating that Kenya had no soldiers deployed in the conflict zone.

The Federation's report also listed soldiers from various African countries purportedly involved in the conflict, with Nigeria recording the highest number of soldiers, followed by Algeria, South Africa, Guinea, and Senegal. However, Sing'oei stressed that Kenya's stance remains unchanged, firmly denying any involvement in the conflict.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, Kenya reaffirms its commitment to peace and stability both domestically and internationally. The government remains vigilant in upholding the principles of non-interference and peaceful coexistence among nations, while urging all parties involved to seek diplomatic solutions to the ongoing crisis.
