In a historic decision, the African Union Executive Council has designated the Eastern Africa region as the sole contributor of candidates for the upcoming Chairperson position of the African Union Commission (AUC). "The African Union Executive Council today unanimously adopted a critical decision that it is the turn of the Eastern Africa region to submit candidates for the position of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). The elections will be held in February 2025," the statement read in part.
With this directive in place, Eastern Africa emerges as a focal point for leadership within the AU, underlining the growing influence and prominence of the region on the continental stage.
Presently, two notable figures from Eastern Africa have expressed their intention to vie for the esteemed position. Among them is Kenya's opposition leader, Raila Odinga, a seasoned statesman known for his advocacy and political acumen.
