Blow on Traffickers as 67 Bales of Bhang Seized in Mwea

In a significant blow to drug trafficking operations, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has struck another blow against illicit activity, this time seizing 67 bales of bhang and apprehending two traffickers in the Kimbimbi area of Mwea, Kirinyaga County. The operation, spearheaded by DCI's Operations Support detectives, marks a major victory in the ongoing battle against drug syndicates.
The meticulous operation was fueled by intelligence indicating a shift in tactics by a notorious syndicate trafficking drugs from Moyale. Instead of using traditional methods like concealing the contraband in false compartments of lorries, the traffickers opted for less conspicuous saloon cars. However, the vigilant surveillance teams of the Operations Support Unit (OSU) were quick to adapt, deploying hawk-eyed officers along routes frequented by the criminals, effectively foiling their attempts to evade law enforcement.
The breakthrough came at 2 pm when the first vehicle, a Nissan Primera (Infiniti G20) bearing registration number KAM 219Q, was intercepted at Kimbimbi. A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 30 bales of the prohibited substance concealed in gunny bags. The driver, identified as Robert Ndwiga Njiru from Runyenjes, Embu County, was promptly arrested, further crippling the criminal operation.
Minutes later, a Toyota NZE with registration number KBD 728U, laden with an additional 37 bales of bhang, attempted to flee towards Makutano junction. However, the determined pursuit by law enforcement officers thwarted any hopes of escape. Francis Muriithi, the driver of the second vehicle, was swiftly apprehended, bringing an end to the reckless attempt to smuggle illegal drugs.
Following their capture, both suspects and the seized contraband were escorted to Nairobi for further processing, ensuring that justice is served and the illegal drugs are removed from circulation. This successful operation underscores the DCI's unwavering commitment to combatting drug trafficking and protecting communities from the scourge of narcotics.
Today's seizure is not an isolated incident but part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking activities. Just last month, in a joint operation along the Garissa-Thika Road in Mwingi, law enforcement agencies confiscated 132 bales of bhang hidden in a truck purportedly transporting mattresses. The discovery, which initially uncovered 28 bales stashed on the roof cabin, led to further scrutiny, revealing a false bottom equipped with strong bolts and rails concealing an additional 104 bales.
These recent operations serve as a stark reminder to drug traffickers that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and determined to disrupt their illicit activities at every turn. The DCI, in collaboration with other security agencies, will continue to employ intelligence-led strategies to dismantle drug syndicates and safeguard communities from the devastating effects of drug abuse and trafficking.
