The $40 million requested by the US State Department has been halted by the chairperson of the House of Representatives and a top Republican on Senate Foreign Relations, citing the need for more detailed information regarding the mission's objectives and logistics.
US lawmakers have expressed reservations about the lack of clarity in the Biden administration's plan and raised concerns about whether Kenyan courts would approve the deployment and whether Kenyan police officers could effectively reach Port-au-Prince. A report from members of the US Congress warned that the withheld funds could potentially prevent the deployment of the Kenyan police force unless another country steps in to bridge the financial gap.
Despite the impasse, the US State Department remains engaged with Congress to secure approval for the funds. Secretary Antony Blinken recently announced during talks in Jamaica that the US government would increase its pledge to $300 million for the Haiti mission, underscoring continued diplomatic efforts to address the crisis.
The decision to block funding from the United States comes on the heels of Canada's commitment to support Kenya's mission in Haiti. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged Ksh8.2 billion ($80.5 million) to the mission, emphasizing Canada's ongoing efforts to assist Caribbean Community (CARICOM) members in participating in the mission.

President William Ruto engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Trudeau, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts to address the crisis.
