Government Responds to Allegations from Office of the Retired President

In a recent press release, the Office of the fourth Retired President levied several accusations concerning their operations. Hon. Sen. (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura, CBS, the Government Spokesperson, swiftly addressed these claims, setting the record straight on various contentious points.

1. Vehicles:

The government acknowledges providing 14 vehicles to the Office of the Third Retired President, contrary to their assertion. These vehicles are adequately fueled and maintained through the State House, with records indicating recent servicing and refueling as late as May 15, 2024. Despite allegations of their outdated nature, the vehicles, acquired between 2020 and 2022, remain fitting for the esteemed position. The office's request for additional vehicles, amounting to a significant sum of KSh140 million, is also highlighted.

2. Office:

Concerning office space, the government emphasizes the availability of a suitable office in Nyari, Nairobi, previously utilized by former President Mwai Kibaki. Rejecting this option in favor of leasing private property raises procurement concerns and conflicts of interest, a stance deemed untenable by the government.

3. Staff:

The Government confirms that the Third Retired President's staff are on the government payroll, consistent with the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act. However, the absence of formal submission for Mr. George Kariuki and Ms. Kanze Dena's inclusion in the staff roster underscores procedural discrepancies.

4. Budget:

Addressing financial matters, the Government assures diligent payment of salaries, allowances, and vehicle maintenance for the retired President and their staff. Pertinently, adherence to stipulated regulations regarding foreign trips and subsistence allowances is emphasized, underscoring the commitment to upholding legal frameworks.
